Rubicon Watches — Our Story

Rubicon Watches began life in 1985 as Direct Watch Company, founded by Leon Woodward with the help of his young family. What started as a small family venture quickly became a familiar sight at markets, fairs, air shows and festivals across the country. From Stockport to Skipton, Buxton to Bakewell’s famous cattle market, the Woodwards built their reputation the old‑fashioned way — face to face, one customer at a time.

Leon had a simple philosophy: offer quality watches and clocks at honest prices, and always be willing to strike a bargain. It worked. For years, weekly markets were the backbone of the business and the Woodward name became synonymous with friendly service and reliability.

As the world changed in the late 90s and the internet reshaped retail, the family adapted once again. Moving online — first through eBay — was a big shift for a team used to shaking hands and chatting across market stalls. But the same personal service that defined their early days became the foundation of their online success.

In 2016, the business returned to its roots in Chapel‑en‑le‑Frith, transforming an old bank in the historic town square into a warehouse, offices and a brand‑new shop. This time, the shop flourished. Customers could pop in for batteries, glass replacements or strap fittings while they waited — all delivered with the same friendly, no‑nonsense service that had shaped the business since day one.

Today, Rubicon Watches serves customers across the UK and around the world. Whether you visit the shop or order online, you’ll receive the same level of care — including bracelet sizing so your new timepiece arrives ready to wear.

Now authorised to sell over 30 brands, Rubicon offers everything from children’s watches and clocks to jewellery and exclusive in‑house designs. The business continues to grow under the guidance of Gareth and the dedicated team who share the same values Leon built the company on.

Gareth has always believed in the power of community spirit. Each Christmas and summer, he creates a brand‑new window display designed to bring a bit of joy to the market place. Over the years, the shopfront has featured everything from moving model trains and glowing open‑fire scenes at Christmas to commemorative displays for the King’s Coronation and colourful celebrations for the local carnival. For Gareth, these displays aren’t just decorations—they’re a way of giving something back to the people who pass by every day.

More than forty years later, our roots remain firmly in Chapel‑en‑le‑Frith. Our values haven’t changed either: good old‑fashioned customer service, honest pricing, and a genuine commitment to satisfaction. It’s who we were in the 80s, and it’s who we are today.
